Apprenticeships
We established our Apprenticeship Programme in 2017 to recognise the crucial role apprentices can play in inspiring children and young people to be happy, healthy and active.
Since this time, we have supported over 80 apprentices who have progressed into further or higher education, or have gained employment (including within our team).
To work as an LSSP apprentice applicants must be 16 years or above, and:
- Enjoy working with children
- Enjoy physical activity and sport
- Have an interest in education
- Enjoy working as part of a team
- Have a willingness to learn.

What is an apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are a mix of learning at work and off-the-job learning. The employer pays the apprentice a wage and the government pays for most or all of the training. Physical Activity Apprentices will help with the delivery of physical activity and sport in primary, secondary and special schools.
What are the pathways?
• Level 2 Community Activator Coach
• Level 3 Teaching Assistant with PE Focus
• Level 3 Teaching Assistant (Generic)
• Level 4 Sports Coach
What are the hours?
All apprentices must work a minimum of 30 hours per week. Start and end times do vary, and are individual to the workplace. 20% of your week will be spent training.
What is the salary?
Salary is dependent on age, experience and whether you’re in the first or second year of an apprenticeship – this will be agreed by the school upon appointment. Government rate for a first year apprentice is £7.55 ph (from April 2025).
