Apprenticeship Training

Aligning to school’s needs, the Apprenticeship programme has been hugely successful giving schools additional staffing and increasing opportunities for young people to engage in activities in curriculum and extra-curricular time. Apprentices are positive role models, “an extra pair of hands” to support staff and are engaging children whilst gaining valuable experience.

LSSP has teamed up with Educational & Sporting Futures, a team of innovative, dynamic, experienced Teachers, Subject Leaders & work-based Learning Assessors who are driven by a desire to create opportunities and raise aspirations for all individuals to deliver standards that work exceptionally well within school settings. As an OFSTED Outstanding Provider and award winning provider of education based qualifications , Sporting Futures Training is well placed to help schools to get the most out of their workforce.
Working with Schools, Liverpool City Council & Multi Academy Trusts, we are able to offer apprenticeship training to local authority LEVY paying schools as well as non- local authority LEVY paying schools (Eg; C of E voluntary aided, Catholic schools, foundation primaries, Academies etc). LSSP also has the facility to employ Apprentices on behalf of the host school if required.

Information for Apprentices: FAQs
What is an Apprenticeship?
Apprenticeships are a mix of learning at work and off-the-job learning. The employer pays the Apprentice a wage and the government pays for most or all of the training. Apprenticeships allow new talent to develop through the ranks &/or equip existing staff with the skills the organisation needs to succeed.
Physical Activity Apprentices will help with the delivery of physical activity and sport in primary, secondary and special schools. This could involve; supporting PE lessons, leading extra-curricular activities, working with children to encourage them to get involved in more physical activity, working with parents to engage them in physical activity, developing children as leaders, developing school to community links, physical activity challenges (Daily Mile, personal challenges) or other duties as the school may require.
Who can benefit?
To work as an LSSP Apprentice applicants must be 16 yrs + enjoy working with children, physical activity & sport, have an interest in education, be self-motivated, enjoy working as part of a team & have a willingness to learn.
What are the Qualifications & Training?
LSSP & Educational & Sporting Futures will work with the Apprentice to find the most appropriate support. Most of the training is on-the-job, working with a mentor to learn job specific skills and central venue training will take place at suitable times throughout the year. An apprenticeship typically takes between 13-18 months and the Apprentice has to show their mastery of their role by the end of programme assessment.
The Level 2 Community Activator Coach Standard allows the apprentice to focus on leading sessions, understanding participants and prepares them for work in the physical activity & community sports sector.
The Level 3 Teaching Assistant Standard allows the apprentice to support the class teacher to enhance pupils learning in groups / individually in both PE and the wider curriculum.
The Level 4 Sports Coach Standard allows the apprentice to gain knowledge and skills to drive the development of the whole school PE and School Sport strategy & enhance the teaching and curriculum
How much does an Apprentice Earn?
The salary is dependent on your age, experience and if in 1st or 2ndyear of an apprenticeship. This will be agreed by the school.
Government rate for a 1st year apprentice is £7.55 ph (from April 2025)
What are the Hours?
All apprentices must work a minimum of 30 hours pw & start / end times vary and are individual to the workplace.
20% of your week is spent training
How long does an Apprenticeship last for?
L2: 13-15 months
L3: 13-15 months
L4: 15-18 months
What will my Apprenticeship cost me?
An apprentice will need to cover the cost of day-to-day expenses, such as lunch and travel. It’s a real job, with hands-on experience, a salary and the chance to train whilst working. They will be treated just like all the other employees, with a contract of employment and holiday leave. Kit and all work materials are provided
Do I need GCSEs in Maths & English?
L2: Apprentices will need to have achieved Level 1 Maths & English and have taken the test for Level 2 Maths & English (Prior to taking the End Point Assessment (EPA)
L3: Apprentices will need to have GCSE Maths & English Grade 4+ before starting the apprenticeship
L4: Apprentices will need to have GCSE Maths & English Grade 4+ before starting the apprenticeship
What can I do when the apprenticeship is completed?
Once successfully finished, Apprentices have plenty of choices. They could apply for another apprenticeship, continue their studies at College or University, find a career that uses their new skills or start a job with their existing or a new employer. Schools do offer employment when the apprenticeship is completed, but have no obligation to do so.
Other benefits of completing an apprenticeship include: employability skills, exit routes created, developing confidence and self-esteem, exposure to the world of work and professional networking opportunities.

An apprentice can be of any age and employing one is just like employing any other member of staff. They should be employed for at least 30 hours per week and have a contract of employment for the length of time needed to complete the apprenticeship training – between 13 and 20 months
During this period, Educational & Sporting Futures will provide the necessary off-the-job learning. Government guidance for employers can be found below.
Where necessary LSSP can employ your Apprentice on behalf of schools if required.
